Places to visit from Athens

Meteora

Meteora, with its breathtaking monasteries on towering rock formations, is one of the most iconic sights in Greece. Located about 350 km northwest of Athens, it makes for an unforgettable 1-2 day trip.

The easiest and most scenic way to get there is by train. From Athens’ central station (Larissis Station), you can take a direct train to Kalambaka, the town at the base of Meteora. The trip takes around 4-5 hours. Trains depart multiple times a day.

Aegina

Aegina, a charming island just off the coast of Athens known for its pistachio orchards and relaxing beaches, it’s easily accessible and perfect for a 1-day trip.

Ferries depart regularly from Piraeus Port (30 minutes from Athens center). The fast ferry takes around 40 minutes, while the regular ferry takes about 1 hour. I personally prefer the regular because the boat is bigger and more comfortable.

There you can visit the temple of Aphaia, one of Greece's best-preserved ancient temples or rent a bicycle and do an easy 10km ride from the port town to the village Perdika.

Nafplio

Nafplio, one of Greece’s most beautiful towns, is a charming coastal escape just a couple of hours from Athens. Known for its Venetian architecture, historic fortresses, and scenic waterfront, also perfect for a 1-day trip.

Buses depart from Athens’ Kifissos Bus Station, taking around 2.5 hours to reach Nafplio. Tickets can be purchased at the station or online.

If you have strong legs, you can climb the 999 steps to Palamidi fortress and later relax and drink a cold Zeos beer (ask for the unpasteurized version - ΦΡΕΣΚΙΑ / ΑΠΑΣΤΕΡΙΩΤΗ).
